Do You Want God's Presence...or Just His Promises?

Read: Exodus chapter 33

I wonder how many of us would have been perfectly okay with God's offer in Exodus 33. Imagine God saying, "I'll still give you everything I promised. I'll provide for you. I'll bless you. I'll open doors. I'll take care of you. But My Presence won't go with you." If I'm honest, there are days when that sounds more appealing than I'd like to admit. We can become so focused on what we're asking God to do that we slowly stop pursuing God Himself.
That's exactly where Israel found themselves.

The golden calf wasn't just a random idol. It represented prosperity, security, and the good life. Even more sobering, they worshiped that idol in the name of the Lord. They wanted God's blessings, but their hearts had already drifted away from God. It's easy to point fingers at Israel until we realize we can do the same thing. We pray for the promotion. We pray for financial stability. We pray for a healthy family. None of those things are wrong. In fact, they're good gifts from a good Father. But somewhere along the way, it's possible for the gift to become more important than the Giver.

One sentence from Exodus 33 has been sitting with me all week, "If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here." Moses understood something that Israel had forgotten. The Promised Land without God was no promise at all. He wasn't interested in success if it meant walking without the Presence of the Lord. He would rather stay in the wilderness with God than live in abundance without Him... That challenges me.

If God answered every prayer on my list today, would it actually bring me closer to Him? Or have some of those prayers quietly become substitutes for Him? The beautiful part of this story is that Moses points us to Jesus. Moses stood between God and the people, asking God to extend His favor to everyone because he had found favor with God. That's exactly what Jesus has done for us, only infinitely better.

Because Jesus has found perfect favor with the Father, everyone who trusts Him is welcomed into God's Presence. We don't earn it. We don't deserve it. We receive it because of Christ. So today, before you ask God for anything, spend a few moments simply enjoying Him. Tell Him you love Him. Thank Him for His grace. Sit quietly in His Presence. Because at the end of the day, His greatest gift isn't what He gives us. It's Himself.

This Week's Challenge:

Each morning before your day begins, pray this simple prayer:

"Lord, I don't just want Your blessings today. I want Your Presence."

Spend at least ten uninterrupted minutes with God before reaching for your phone, email, or social media. Ask Him to become your greatest desire, not simply the source of what you desire.
