When You Don't Know What to Do, Look to Jesus

I've been thinking about how easy it is to take our eyes off Jesus. When life is going well, we can become distracted by everything else. When life gets hard, we can become consumed by the problem in front of us. We start looking everywhere for answers; We look to people, to money, to politics... we even look to ourselves. And sometimes, if we're honest, we start wondering if going backward would somehow be easier. That's one of the reasons I love the book of Hebrews. It was written to Christians who were tired, under pressure, and tempted to drift away from the faith. And the writer's answer wasn't complicated: Look to Jesus.

Hebrews begins by giving us an incredible picture of who Jesus is. If you want to know what God is like, look to Jesus. If you want to know how much God loves you, look to Jesus. If you wonder whether your sin can truly be forgiven, look to Jesus. Hebrews 1:3 says He is the radiance of God's glory and the exact imprint of His nature. He created all things and sustains all things. He gave Himself to purify us from sin, and then He sat down at the right hand of the Father.

He sat down because His work was finished. That has been encouraging me this week. I don't have to figure everything out today. I don't have to carry the weight of the whole world on my shoulders. I don't have to earn what Jesus has already accomplished. I need to keep looking to Him. Because everything around us changes: People change, circumstances change, governments change, plans change, but Jesus doesn't. He was faithful yesterday, He is faithful today, He will be faithful tomorrow.

So whatever you're facing right now, I want to encourage you with the same message Hebrews gives us: Don't drift. Don't go backward. Keep your eyes on Jesus. When everything around you changes, build your life on the One who doesn't.

Ask Yourself:

• Where have I been looking besides Jesus for hope? 
• Am I tempted to drift or go backward in my faith? 
• What circumstance in my life needs to be brought back under the truth of who Jesus is?
• What would it look like for me to simply look to Jesus this week?

Prayer:

Jesus, open our eyes to see You more clearly. When we are discouraged, help us look to You. When we are uncertain, help us look to You. When we are hurting, help us look to You. Thank You for revealing the Father to us and for giving Yourself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Help us build our lives on You, the One who never changes. Keep us from drifting backward. Strengthen our faith and keep our eyes fixed on You. Amen.
