Don't Drift

Read: Hebrews chapter 2

I've been thinking about how easy it is to drift. Nobody wakes up one morning and decides, "I think I'm going to slowly drift away from Jesus." It usually happens much more quietly than that. You get busy, get distracted, prayer becomes less frequent, you stop opening your Bible as much, church becomes easier to miss and little by little, you drift.

What are some things that can distract us from Jesus?
Is there an area of your life where you've stopped paying attention spiritually?
That's why Hebrews 2:1 says we need to pay close attention. What really grabbed me in this chapter is found a few verses later. The writer says that we don't yet see everything in subjection to Jesus. Honestly, that feels pretty accurate sometimes. There are things in this world I don't understand. There are things in life that don't make sense. There is suffering, disappointment, and unanswered questions.

What is something in your life right now that you don't fully understand?
How can looking to Jesus change the way you walk through uncertainty?
Then Hebrews says something simple: "But we see Jesus." I love that. We may not understand everything, but we can see Him. And when we look at Jesus, we see something incredible. The One who created everything stepped into His creation. The One who is above all things became one of us. He experienced weakness. He suffered. He was tempted. He died. Why? Because He came to rescue us.

Here's the part that gets me: Hebrews says that Jesus is not ashamed to call us His brothers and sisters. He knows everything about me, and still, through Him, I've been brought into God's family. So when I'm tempted to drift, I need to see Jesus. When life is confusing, I need to see Jesus. When I forget who I am, I need to see Jesus. When I'm struggling and need help, I need to run to Jesus. Maybe that's the simple reminder we all need this week. Don't drift, instead see Jesus. Remember who you are. Run to Jesus, He's closer than you think, and He's not ashamed to call you family.
Why do you think we sometimes try to handle life on our own rather than running to Jesus?
How does knowing that you belong to God's family give you hope?
What does it practically look like to run to Jesus when you're struggling?
Prayer:

Jesus, thank You that You came so low to rescue us. Thank You that You understand our weakness and temptation. Thank You that through Your death, You defeated sin and death and made a way for us to become part of God's family. Keep us from drifting. Help us stay anchored in You. When life is confusing, help us see You. When we forget who we are, remind us that we are Your sons and daughters. And when we are weak, help us run to You. Amen.
